I mentioned that I had been to the sugar bush in Luskville, QC and photographed the plaque I;d made. This client has some of my larger 12 x 18 inch cutting boards. I did not expect this client to use the cutting boards in her sugar shack, but use them she did. Now my cutting boards are made for home use, usually fairly light use. Some of the woods I use are softer hard woods, and I use them because of their colour or grain. Not so with the staff at the sugar bush. These people are using heavy and sharp knives with a lot of elbow grease, and the boards showed it. I'm glad to see they performed well under this type of pressure.
So my client brought back half her boards for my free refinishing service. Usually, that's a quick sanding to get rid of marks and then a generous oiling. Not this time. The heavy cut marks required some planing first, then sanding and oiling. The boards are about 1/24" thinner now, but are back in business at the sugar shack. I mentioned to my client that I will start designing thicker boards made of (ironically) hard sugar maple or hickory so that the boards stand up better to heavy use.
If you have one of my boards and you think it requires a bit of tender loving care, drop me a line and we can set up a time to do some free maintenance on your board.
