I'm always on the lookout for spurtle-related stuff. After all, it's our most popular item and we've shipped them to Canada, the US and even Europe. The other day, I stumbled upon that original spurtle giveaway from Rice Krispies (remember sending box tops to Don Mills, ON or Battle Creek, MI or Reidsville NC?) and the spurtle they offered looked different. I'd chalked it up to "artistic license" on the part of the person who drew the spurtle, but it turns out that one of my clients remembers very vividly having exactly that type of spurtle. It turns out that in the early 70s, the spurtle had a distinct "blade" on one side and at the top. The general shape was also a little different. A little more research uncovered three distinct periods of spurtles. The early to mid 70s (with the design to the left), the late 70s with the spurtle design we have always had in our online store (originally sold by itself), and then another from the early 80s that was sold as part of a set of five different spurtles. As a first step, we're introducing our vintage 1970s era spurtle in the online store. As you can see from the photos, we were as faithful as possible in the re-creation. We're also working with Mary F. who owned one of the other spurtles in the set of five: a spoon type affair with a concave hole in the middle). Stay tuned for more spurtle news as we finalize that design. |
