So I'm making a bunch of them out of hard sugar maple for the upcoming Spring craft show of the Capital Artisans Guild. They make a great, inexpensive Mother's Day gift. As you can see, I have 24 blanks ready to be cut. As you can also see, like the general population out there, 25% of them will be left-handed.
So what the heck is a spurtle? This is a spurtle. Not the usual your gruel-mixing stick that you can buy from Lee Valley, but a really handy kitchen utensil to mix, scrape, flip, fold, and more. The construction is pretty ingenious. The handle is flat and fits well in the hand allowing to mix heavy doughs with relative ease. The far side is flat to help scrape the sides of a bowl or pot. The top end has two different curves to allow the scraping of the corners of a pot or bowl. The strange curve on the bottom allows one to drain the water from potatoes or noodles after they are cooked (the spurtle body prevents the noodles or veggies from falling out, while the curve allows the water to drain out). I didn't invent the things. You will notice that my "template" has the letter "GG" on it. It stands for Galloping Gourmet. Yup, some of you in the right age group will remember Graham Kerr's show from the 1970s, and he was a big fan of spurtles. I actually managed to unearth this Rice Krispies spurtle give-away from the November 1972 edition of "Ebony" magazine.

Thanks for your comment. It is very possible to buy them. Either contact me by email through this site, or use the online shopping page. Note that it will be cheaper to contact me as I can calculate one global shipping cost.

We are enormously pleased with our spurtles. In fact with four adults cooking at all hours in this house I may order more to omit disputes. They have performed enormously well. The speed of shipping was incredible. Thanks Yves.

I was searching for spurtles - real ones, not the junk generally being sold today - and found your website. Are you still making the Graham Kerr design, and it so what will it take to convince you to sell me two or three? The packers "lost" the box with mine inside during my final move before retirement.

Do you, or will you make the spurtle (10 1/2 inches long) with two holes in the end (3/4" diameter). otherwise uniform curved shape for stirring and mixing? We'd love 2 if you are still making or will make them. Thanks,

Hi Pamela. Easiest way is to go through the online store. Pick the type of spurtle you'd like, choose for which hand, add to the cart and check out through Paypal. Shipping costs will be added automatically. Let me know if you need assistance, I'd be glad to help.

I am still using my spurtle which was purchased way back when GK was still on TV. It is just as good as ever (maple). I don't know if it is a rt. hand or lft. hand. In your photo of the two spurtles it looks like the one on the left. Sometime later, my husband, who was also a fine woods crafter, made me another one, but it was like the one on the right! So I have one of each, but I don't know which is which! Can you let me know?

I got my Spurtle 50 years ago from the Galloping Gourmet and still use it. I hand wash it and have oiled it with olive oil. I have one of his cook books also.

Are you still making these things? I had two but one got mangled in a blender incident many moons ago. Still useful, but I'd love a couple of replacements to join the last intact one I have. It's got to be over 40 years old.

Do you still make these spurtles? Further, is it just the big one that you make or the full set. I would be interested in purchasing whatever you make. Please advise. Thanks, Rick
